Become a Project SAFE donor to help neighbors, protect environment

Tracy is a single mother of three children who struggles to make ends meet. The last challenge she needs is the constant problem of a failing septic system that backs up the plumbing at her home on Squire Pope Road. Yet this problem continues to affect Tracy and her family, and all too many families on Hilton Head Island.

Septic systems are ill-suited for use on the island due to our high groundwater table, and septic failures threaten public health and pollute the environment. About nine percent of Hilton Head PSD customers still lack access to the public sewer system, relying instead upon septic systems to treat their household wastewater.

When the PSD makes sewer service available, many families still struggle to meet the cost of connecting their property to the sewer system. That is where the financial assistance of Project SAFE comes into play.

Project SAFE (Sewer Access for Everyone) is a fund of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry. The fund provides financial assistance for low- and moderate-income families to cover their cost of connecting to the public sewer system. Project SAFE relies upon individual donations to assist our neighbors in need. Please consider a donation to Project SAFE.

For more information about becoming a Project SAFE donor, please contact the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry at (843) 681-9100 or Hilton Head PSD at (843) 681-5525.

Together, we can end the threats posed by failing septic systems and ensure a healthy, clean environment for generations of islanders to enjoy.
